Regression in Mythology: During the 2nd century BC the Hindu scholar Patañjali discussed the idea of the soul becoming burdened with an accumulation of impressions as part of the karma from previous lives. Patañjali called the process of past-life regression prati-prasav, and saw it as addressing current problems through memories of past lives. It has been found that many of what ails us today are rooted from our experiences. One can say that the psycho-dynamics of the human mind is to blame for this. But studies show that such theory is not to be left to the science geeks. There are proofs of these and many clinical psychologists do practice this type of therapy. But what is regression therapy exactly? Read on as we discuss the basic things you need to know about it, including the basic types of regression therapy that is widely used today.
What is Regression Therapy?
Regression therapy is a rather complex type of therapy and is not very easy to apply. This is why only a select few clinical psychologists, the ones who have had extensive training and experience, can successfully apply this to patients in need. It basically deals with the subconscious, about experiences that we somehow forgot for any particular reason.
The therapy believes that the mind is able to remember every single experience that it encounters even if the individual does not seem to recall it. This includes childhood experiences that we were too young to recall, memories from a traumatic experience, or even memories of experiences in a past life.
The emotions of past and un-recalled memories somehow trigger some physical responses that an individual experiences in the present.
The Different Types of Regression Therapy.
There are many differing types of regression therapy depending on how it is needed by patients; but to sum up, there are three basic types:
1. Age Regression Therapy.
This type of therapy primarily helps individuals in trying to recall some lost memory from the past. It doesn’t have to be from a very long time ago, it could be about certain things that the individual has trouble recalling.
This can be applied to such things as a lost PIN for a certain account, a crucial memory needed for someone who witnessed a crime, or an incident in the past that one needs to remember. This type of therapy is particularly placid and guides the patient back to the experience with a clearer mind, allowing him or her to reexamine it.
2. Diagnostic Regression Therapy.
When the patient is experiencing an emotional condition, or even a form of psychosomatic disorder, the therapist can help out by administering what is called a diagnostic regression therapy. This is also quite gentle, allowing the patient to relax and be in a trance-like state and then slowly leading him or her to the past one year at a time.
The goal of this type of therapy is to aid the patient in recalling the time when the certain condition started to occur and to eventually identify the cause. This can be a good type of therapy for anxiety treatment because it is a form of emotional disorder.
3. Past Life Regression Therapy.
Finally, there is the past life regression therapy. This is a new type of therapy in regression and is still growing as we speak. Although there are still a few studies about it, this remains a type of therapy that clinicians look into with interest as there have been several cases of patients being able to tap into memories of their “past life”. Much remains to be proven through research, though, but psychologists are not closing their doors on this phenomenon.
Whatever reason a person has for seeking regression therapy, just remember to look for someone who is certified and has had extensive training and experience. It takes years of training and experience to conduct a thorough examination of the patient’s history as well as accounts of his or her family members before a session should be considered.
