My first generation Italian American friends say that their families call pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, “gravy.” Thanks to our friend Aronno for sharing Uncle Tony’s Spectacular Homemade Tomato Sauce or gravy recipe. I could have used it a week ago when I found only salsa in my fridge and pasta in the cupboard. No sweat, though… I used my “Latchkey Cooking” skills to turn salsa into tomato sauce (recipe here). The best childhood memories I have come from spending time with my family. Only my ‘family’ consisted of my mother, father, 4 siblings, 14 cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and anyone else who would join us when we spent holidays or Sunday dinners at my Uncle Tony’s house. As you can tell, I come from a big Italian family.
If you are familiar with Italian customs then you must possess the knowledge that Italians love food! But not just any food, they have such a love and appreciation for the food that their mothers’ made, and the food that their mother’s mother made, and so on, and so forth.
Italians simply know how to grow it, they know how to cook it, they know how to eat it, and they absolutely know how to share it. But what Italians know that non Italians don’t know… is- that the ‘secret’ really is in the sauce!
Take my Uncle Tony’s recipe for tomato sauce; which is by far the best tomato sauce I have ever tasted.
People in Uncle Tony’s neighborhood used to say they could smell my Uncle Tony’s sauce for miles if the windows were open while he was cooking it on a Sunday afternoon. Some would even swear they could taste it just from the aroma it created.
True story! Visitors to Uncle Tony’s comfy house could smell the delicious fragrant tomatoes cooking in every room of his house. They would salivate simply at the thought of ‘getting a taste’. For the lucky ones who received that delicious taste at the tip of the wooden spoon before Uncle Tony said it was ready to serve, well… they were in heaven!
Aronno’s Uncle Tony’s Secret Spaghetti Sauce Recipe!
Experience Uncle Tony’s Spectacular Homemade Tomato Sauce simply by following the recipe below:
Homemade Tomato Sauce Ingredients
- 4 cans of whole tomatoes
- 2 cans of Tomatoes paste
- 1/8 cup fresh basil finely chopped
- 3 cloves of garlic
- 2 tsps. oregano
- 3 tbsps. sugar
- salt and pepper to taste
Uncle Tony’s Sauce Preparation
1. Blend each can of tomatoes one at a time in a blender on low for a minute and pour into a big pot from blender.
2. Add both cans of tomato paste
3. Add fresh basil and oregano
4. Using a garlic press, crush garlic into pot
Salt & pepper to taste
Turn burner on stove to low, cover pot with a lid loosely and simmer for 5-6 hours stirring every half hour or so. After about 4 hours of simmering add the 3 tbsps. of sugar-(this is Uncle Tony’s ‘secret’-he says it cuts the acidity from the tomatoes). Serve right out of the pot with your favorite pasta!
*This recipe makes quite a bit of tomato sauce which is great because you will have it on hand for many more meals to come. Allow the remainder of the sauce to cool at room temperature. Depending on how much you have left over you will probably want to freeze some and keep some in the refrigerator. I recommend jars for the refrigerator, and the more you have the better.
Purchasing a case of jars to store your tomato sauce is much cheaper than going out and purchasing a few at a time. For the freezer you will want to use plastic containers, putting in just the right amount for a meal.
Making tomato sauce with Uncle Tony’s recipe is not only delicious it is extremely cost effective as well. So they next time you are in the mood for some delicious pasta, a pizza, or even lasagna… forget about the store bought tomato sauce and try Uncle Tony’s, we promise you won’t be disappointed!
There is nothing like having homemade tomato sauce whenever you are in the mood for great Italian food. Make plenty of Uncle Tony’s sauce and keep it handy in sauce bottles.
